What is a PLN, and why do we need one?
I will admit that I was a bit confused when hearing the term "Personal Learning Network" or "PLN." What in the world was a PLN and why are they important? First of all, PLN's is the network that you, as a professional, are surrounded by. This may be intentional, or unintentional, or even some of both. Bottomline, networking is a BIG DEAL! Networking is significant in personal and professional success for several reasons. First, it allows individuals to establish valuable connections that can lead to opportunities such as job offers, collaborations, and partnerships. Networking also promotes the trade-off of knowledge and information, allowing individuals to stay updated regarding business trends and developments. In addition, a strong network provides encouragement and guidance, allowing personal and career growth. In today's connected world, networking is a large part in building a strong, yet adaptable foundation for both personal and professional PLN's.
PLN's take networking to a higher level, because it's MORE than just networking...PLN's represent your own personal diverse group of networks, that provides you with the unique insights and knowledge that you can (and should) utilize to understand different topics and perspectives in your field of expertise. By keeping in mind that PLN's need to have the ability to adapt to changes in technology, the professional world, and most importantly your needs, will allow you to make sure you have the best PLN at your fingertips at all times. In addition, this allows you to hopefully collaborate with others and hopefully be a part of their PLN as well! PLN's empower people to take control of their professional journey, and customize their own needs, exposures and involvement.
Hi Jesse,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed your post. I especially liked how you mentioned that having or being a part of a PLN can be intentional or unintentional. When I was reading up on PLNs I did some self reflection to see if I could identify the PLNs I was knowingly a part of verses the PLNs I didn't realize I was taking part in. To my surprise, I was able to identify a few that can be considered PLNs that I was actively taking part in.
I do agree that they are extremely valuable to both your personal and professional development and anyone who isn't taking advantage of PLNs definitely should be. Great job!
Hi Cole, thank you for your comment. I agree that anyone who isn't currently utilizing their PLN's should definitely do so!
DeleteHi Jesse,
ReplyDeleteI like your insight into the possibilities of PLNs. I've never been into online or virtual networking as it's become more of a thing since I was involved in the sales. Since then I've had few opportunities, and hence, needs for outreach or input from outside the organization where I worked.
My original thought about PLNs was specifically tied to educators and trainers, and I was cautious about the implications of being wooed and lured away to a collective form of group thought. I'm aware that PLNs are better regarded as a contributor and your post gives excellent perspective.
Many Thanks.
Thank you for your feedback! I can see how being involved in sales has brought forth new opportunities for PLN's. I agree that at first I viewed PLN's as a resource for "other" professions. However, as I've become more involved with my PLN's I am realizing that it is sufficient to every type of person out there!
